The owners of an English country house set in the middle of the bushveld, decided to make a bold move and invest in a contemporary home in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

My brief before I met the couple: “In the the centre of our new home, will hang a single majestic King Protea painting by renowned South African artist Paul Blomkamp.” A further wish was to own a modern mustard yellow sofa.

A few weeks later I met the interesting couple and to my delight the presentation was met with great enthusiasm. To start our relationship off I was spoilt by the Lord & Lady playing classical music, each on their own baby grand pianos.

The transformation began with a number of necessary renovations. A natural base of taupe seed cloth wallpaper was applied to soften the clinical lines of the modern structure. My search for key pieces of furniture, led me to the exclusive Ligne Roset (an importer of French contemporary furniture). To my surprise the art work and the sofa complimented each other perfectly! From all the living rooms, the hues of pinks, purples and shades of blues were interwoven throughout.

Final dramatic art works, supplied by the modern Gallery 88 Paarl www.gallery88.co.za were carefully and strategically placed under pinpoint spots. In complete contrast to the entertainment rooms, the bedrooms were linked by a central relaxing room which flowed using soft natural shades of linen, creams and crisp whites, creating peace and calmness throughout the upper levels.

When the windmills of my mind take me back to that gracious home, I can still hear……the tinkling of those keys!
